The Office can now count on its own resource: between €6m to 10m coming from three water charges (4 cts/m3 for drinking water, 2.5 for the industry and 0.1 for agriculture). But these resources will not be enough to finance the heavy rehabilitations of works required: to improve the yield of the adduction network for sewage of the city of Saint-Denis, and cut water consumption, 291 l/d/capita (whereas the French average consumption is 137 l/d/cap.). Regarding the massive east to west water transfer project decided in 1983, which will allow supplying three thousands irrigation users, it is behind schedule and running significant additional costs. Réunion is the first overseas county to have its own water agency, and Guadeloupe should be next.Arnaud GarriguesTo join the editorial team of Hydroplus, click here.
